  7. A friend of a friend, who is a probabilist, made a bet that he
  8. could write a publishable paper in Statistics within 24 hours.

  10.  He did this as follows: first of all he went to his filing
  11. cabinet and found some unfinished work on probability
  12. distributions which he'd given up because he couldn't prove
  13. anything. He then invented a 'cover story' involving sheep and
  14. fruit trees, and wrote a Statistical paper on the subject,
  15. including the results he couldn't prove together with 'heuristic'
  16. arguments, i.e. hand-waving. He then sent it to a well-known
  17. journal which shall remain nameless but for the sake of argument
  18. we'll call Biometrika.

  20.  Some time after he received an acceptance letter for his
  21. content-free paper, with a comment from the editor that he hoped
  22. the author would revise the paper to make it less theoretical. So
  23. he had won his bet.
